How To Choose The Coolest Name For Your Dog

I was enjoying the afternoon sunshine and a glass of cold green tea on the back porch of my garden when suddenly my little nephew appeared in front of me holding a puppy in his arms. It was an ebony-hair, happy puppy with the most loving eyes I've ever seen in my life! My eight-year-old nephew explained to me how they’ve met each other, and how that black Pomeranian puppy has adopted him. “Smart boy, he put it in so nice way!”, I thought. “Mom and Dad have already agreed to keep it, so will you help me with the name?”

Okay, I love my nephew, but how couldn’t love him when he wants to share with me that pleasant giving-name process? I decided to contribute by giving him the following tips as food for thought, and not just proposing charming names. Why? That’s why:

Names are important because they affect how people see your dog when you present it for the first time. A dog named "Slayer" causes a very different reaction than a dog named "Sweetie".

Therefore, do not rush to choose your dog's name. Observe how active it is or what its favorite activities and true personality are. Only then you’ll know what the right name for it is.

When looking for dog names, there are plenty of good ideas to get inspirational about, i.e.:

Fantastic Characters: You can find some good names from your favorite movies, your favorite books, or games. Choose the best fantastic hero (good or bad) depending on the personality and/or appearance of your dog.

Celebrities: Another interesting list of names is the names of famous people or historians. You can choose generals such as Alexander the Great, Charlemagne or Napoleon Bonaparte. You can choose inventors like Edison or DaVinci. You can choose poets, writers, musicians, movie stars, or famous athletes.

Dog country of origin: Different dog breeds come from different regions. You can choose your favorite name or a favorite word from the country where your dog comes from.

Stars and celestial bodies: Finally, a wide range of names for dogs come from the stars and other celestial bodies. For example, if your dog has a reddish hair you can name it Mars, like the planet Mars that is red.

1. Short and simple

Pick a short and simple name that's easy to say. Probably, you will spend a lot of time with your best friend in the coming years and you should say his name many times. Sometimes, you may need to shout him just to get his attention quickly before he starts running behind birds and cats.

2. Try to select a name with 2 syllables

According to experts, it is better to choose a name with 2 syllables. Also, consider choosing a name that starts with a consonant. Dogs recognize the consonants more easily, and you can draw your dog's attention more easily with such a name.

3. Choose a name that is unique

Try to choose a name that is unique and not similar to the names of family members, close relatives or friends. If your dog has a name that is identical or similar to someone else in the family, there may be confusion and will think you will call it when you use that name for the other person.

4. Name selection should be a fun family affair

It is better when the whole family is involved in choosing their dog's name. In this way, everyone feels that he invests in the dog, and he will accept it more easily. In addition, this ensures that everyone will shout the dog with the selected name. Consistency in the name is very important in communicating with your dog.

Do not rush too much to choose your dog's name. Take some time to hang in with it and wait until you begin to see all the different aspects of its personality - its good side, silly side, quirks, fears, most beloved and most hateful activities. When you notice all of these and begin to understand your new friend, the best name for your dog will come effortlessly.
